A Dutch founder went looking for the best place in the world to build software teams for European companies. His research pointed to one country: Sri Lanka.
In 2015, Hugo Hemmen founded Gapstars on that decision.
Teams that embed with the client
The model is different from traditional outsourcing. Gapstars builds dedicated engineering teams that embed directly into their clients' companies, working as full extensions of the business instead of a detached vendor handling tickets.
Today Gapstars has 300+ professionals across hubs in Amsterdam, Lisbon, Dubai and Colombo, with its largest engineering base in Sri Lanka. It supports 75+ companies across the Benelux region, Austria, the UK, the UAE and the US.
The work
Its clients include Otrium, a Dutch fashion scaleup, and Dual Inventive, whose Sri Lankan team works on railway safety systems used across the Netherlands.
Gapstars has been named one of the Top 10 IT Workplaces in Sri Lanka, and regularly flies its Colombo engineers to client headquarters in Europe.
For any founder or CTO watching: a European company chose to build its engineering core in Sri Lanka because the talent measured up against the best in the world.
